Every year, the same email arrives in late November: “We need 80 branded gift boxes for clients — can they be here by the 12th?” Sometimes the answer is yes. It is never yes at the price, the quality or the calm that the same order would have had in September.
If corporate gifting is on your plan this year, this is the article to read now — while the good options are all still open.
The real timeline, worked backwards
Client gifts need to arrive in early December — later than that and they land in empty offices during wind-down week. Work back from there: delivery and packing take a week; production, another one to two; proof approval and your own internal sign-off, another; and deciding what to order, realistically, two or three. That chain starts in late September. Which means the businesses who get this right are thinking about it in August — exactly now.
Client gifts and staff gifts are different jobs
Client gifts are a brand statement opened in front of colleagues. Presentation is most of the value — which is why a curated gift box (mug, tee, keepsake, properly boxed) outperforms a branded pen at any budget. The unboxing is the gift.
Staff gifts are about feeling valued, and the test is simple: would someone use it outside work? A quality hoodie or beanie passes. A cheap branded stress ball does not, and everyone knows what it cost.
What to spend
The honest bands we see: £15–25 per head covers a good single item well presented; £35–50 builds a proper multi-item box for key clients; above that you're into keepsake territory — engraved, commemorative, the things people photograph. Concentration beats coverage: a memorable box for your twenty best clients does more than a token for two hundred.
Three traps, all avoidable in September and expensive in November
- Stock. Popular garment colours and box formats genuinely sell through by November. Early orders choose; late orders take what's left.
- No proof. Rushed December jobs skip the approval step, and that's when a logo prints the wrong shade on eighty boxes. We proof every order before production — but a proof needs a timeline with room for one.
- Delivery pile-up. Every courier network degrades in December. A gift that arrives on the 23rd, after your client has left for the year, spent its budget on nothing.
The quiet advantage of ordering early
September orders get the A-game: full colour choice, unhurried artwork, a proper proof cycle and calm delivery. And your gift arrives before the avalanche — the first branded box of December gets opened and remembered; the ninth gets added to a pile.
